The Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss has said that it is both important and urgent that nations come together and share their experiences to help build cost-effective strategies concerning neurological, mental and developmental problems in children. Dr. Ramadoss said this while inaugurating the 8th Asian & Oceanian Congress of Child Neurology (AOCNA), here today.

Underlining the need for development of super specialities in children, Dr. Ramadoss said, the burden of childhood disability – low birth weight, malnutrition, diarrhea, acute respiratory infection – can leave a life long effect on the quality of life of children and their families. The Minister said, in this era of information technology, inter and intra country linkages can be developed to narrow the gap between the experts, health care providers, medical colleges and the beneficiaries. Quality institutions like AIIMS, with skilled manpower, good infrastructure, wide variety of patient resources and a track record of conducting training programmes should function centers for “Training of trainers”; Child Health Centre being proposed at AIIMS will provide towards this end.

The three-day Congress, with the theme “Neuroprotection of the Child” is being attended by International professionals including Professor Fukuyama, honorary President AOCNA.
