Indian Railways have provided an outlay of Rs. 61.2 crores for converting 4080 passenger coaches from the existing vacuum to air brake coaches during the current financial year 2004-2005.
The Ministry of Railways has fixed a target for conversion of all the remaining 7910 vacuum brake passenger coaches to air brake by March 2006. With that the entire passenger coaching stock would have been converted to air brake.
Air brake provides safer rail services besides smoother and comfortable rail journey.
Indian Railways own a fleet of 2,14,760 wagons (units), 39,852 passenger coaches and 7,681 locomotives.
