The Consumer Price Index released by the Central Statistical Organisation of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation for Urban non-manual employees with indices for 59 select Urban Centres in the country for September 2004, indicates that Chennai topped the list with 520 points same as August 2004. The other three metropolitan cities that followed Chennai are Delhi with 447, Mumbai 435 and Kolkatta 404.
However, the All India Consumer Price Index remained unchanged at 437 during the month i.e. the same as August. But when compared with September 2003, the All India Index registered an increase of 4 per cent over a year.
A comparison of the Consumer Price Index for September 2004 with respect to the 59 select urban centres in the country, with the indices for the same month last year i.e. September 2003, points out that the variation in the index for various cities ranged between 1.1 to 8.6 per cent with the highest increase in Asansol and the least, in Madurai. As many as 33 Centres registered lower annual percentage increase compared to the All India figure of 4 per cent, while 24 Centres recorded higher percentage rise compared to the all India average.
At the group level, the indices for September compared with August 2004, increased by 0.45 per cent in respect of miscellaneous group and decreased by 0.23 per cent with respect to Food, Beverages and Tobacco group.
