Government of India is releasing commemorative coins in denominations of Rs.100 and Rs.5 in the honour of late Shri K. Kamaraj. The Rs.5 coin will also be for circulation. Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh will release these commemorative coins, here tomorrow. The Chairperson of National Advisory Council, Smt. Sonia Gandhi, will receive the first set of coins.
Each one Hundred Rupee coin will have a Standard weight of 35 grams, containing Silver 50%, Copper 40%, Nickel 5% and Zinc 5% and each Five Rupee-coin will have a Standard weight of 9 grams, containing Copper 75% and Nickel 25%.
The obverse face of the One Hundred Rupee and Five Rupee coin bears the Lion Capital of Ashoka Pillar with the legend Satyamev Jayatay (in Hindi) inscribed below, flanked on the left upper periphery by the work Bharat in Hindi and on the right upper periphery by the word INDIA in English. It shall also bear the denominational value 100 and 5 respectively in International Numerals below the Lion Capitol flanked on the left lower periphery by the word Rupaye in Hindi and right lower periphery by the word RUPEES in English.
The reverse face of the coin shall bear the portait of K. KAMARAJ flanked on the left upper periphery by the words K. KAMARAJ in Hindi, and on the right upper periphery K. KAMARAJ in English. The figure 1903-1975 shall be shown below the portrait in international numerals which shall be common for both the One Hundred Rupee and Five Rupee coin.
The new Rupee 5 coin shall be a legal tender as provided in the Coinage Act, 1996. The existing Five Rupees Coins in circulation shall also continue to be legal tender.
