The COALNET - A Wide Area Network (WAN) of the Department for interlinking the Department of Coal with all its constituent organisations is under implementation. The first phase - to interlink the Department with Coal India Limited headquarters and headquarters of 8 subsidiary companies of CIL has been completed. SECL (a subsidiary company of CIL) has been interlinked with its 12 areas. SCPC DAMA VSATs have been installed at all 22 locations and have been tested for voice and videoconferencing. Data communication is under implementation. CIL has developed an integrated information system for providing data in 28 COALNET formats finalized by the Department through the COALNET. The system has been implemented at CIL.
Videoconferencing facility under COALNET has been provided in the Department in the room of Minister for Coal and Mines. Department has planned to take up the next phase of COALNET implementation in which headquarters of all subsidiary companies of CIL will be interlinked with their areas. The senior officers of this Department will be able to interact with the officers of the coal companies located remotely through Video Conference facility from the Conference Room of the Department. At CIL headquarters, a LAN has been set up with fiber optic backbone connecting 170 nodes. Servers have been installed for providing access to databases developed for the COALNET project.
The Department of Coal maintains bi-lingual website namely, http://coal.nic.in. Updated information on topics like functions of the Department, contact information of senior officers, organisation setup, subordinate offices, policies, statistics, annual report, acts, rules and citizen charter are being displayed in the website.
