The Ministry of Railways has directed all Zonal Railways to take long term and short term measures for improving cleanliness in trains. They have also been advised to conduct ‘Hygiene Audit’ for originating trains.

In addition, Zonal Railways have been instructed to set up atleast One Clean Train Station in their Zone on line of the pilot project at Ratlam on Western Railway within the current financial year by March 2005. A draft tender document for this based on the pilot project at Ratlam has been circulated to Zonal Railways.

The objective of setting up of Clean Train Stations is intended to ensure that all long distance trains are cleaned thoroughly every six to eight hours of journey, within the duration of 20 minutes halt enroute coinciding with the watering station.
