centre releases rs. 36.5 crore to bihar group and rs. 12 crore to rajasthan government

Centre has released Rs.27.28 crore to the Government of Bihar under Rajiv Gandhi Drinking Water Mission(RGDWM), a Centrally sponsored Accelerated Rural Water Supply Programme(ARWSP) towards the first instalment to the State during 2004-05. As per the guidelines of the Rural Water Supply Programmes, 15% of the funds under ARWSP are meant for quality related problem and 5% for taking sustainable measures under Sub-Mission.

Government of India has also released a sum of Rs.9.25 crore under RGDWM as additional Central assistance to meet the rural water supply requirements arising out of the flood situation in the State during 2004-05. This assistance is to be provided out of 5% of the total Central Rural Water Supply outlay earmarked to meet the contingencies arising out of natural disasters. These funds are to be utilized to mitigate the flood-affected areas. Dr. Raghuvansh Prasad Singh, Union Minister of Rural Development has also requested to ensure proper and timely utilization of these funds.

It has been requested that the State should delegate powers for management of Rural Water Supply Schemes through the Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) as per the Constitution of India. The operation and maintenance of the Rural water Supply Schemes have been requested to be transferred to PRIs.

Rs.12 crore has been given to Rajasthan for drought hit areas.
