Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce & Industry (TNCC&I) has thanked the Union Finance Minister for fully exempting from excise duty the concentrated milk put up in unit containers. In a letter to Shri P. Chidambaram, the TNCC&I President hailed the decision stating that the exemptions now granted will enable concentrated milk to be rushed, without any excise burden, from the surplus areas to the deficit areas in the country, thereby protecting the milk farmers in milk surplus states including Tamil Nadu and benefiting milk consumers in milk deficit states.
The decision to grant the exemption was taken after considering representations demanding that concentrated milk not containing additives like sugar, even if it is put up in unit containers for sale, should be treated at par with milk powder which is presently exempted. This has been done to give a boost to the dairy sector and to enable them to tap their full market potential.
