Union Minister of State (I/C) for Urban Employment and Poverty Alleviation, Kumari Selja today laid foundation stone of Sulabh International Academy of Sanitation as a part of the Habitat Week Celebrations in the capital. Member of Parliament, Shri Sachin Pilot, Secretary in the Ministry of Urban Employment and Poverty Alleviation, Smt. Chitra Chopra and the founder of Sulabh movement, Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak were present on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion , Kumari Selja assured all support from the government for those institutions doing good work in the area of sanitation. She said that good intention and programmes of the government can reach the public only with the help of committed NGOs like Sulabh. She also said that those who are liberated from scavenging should be properly employed so that they can earn their living in a respectable manner. She complimented Sulabh Academy for developing toilet technology at a cost of as low as Rs. 500/- and for giving vocational training to many children. Kumari Selja emphasized the need to sensitize public on the issue of sanitation and clean habitat.
Secretary, Ministry of Urban Employment and Poverty Alleviation, Smt. Chitra Chopra emphasized the need to involve school children in the sanitation campaign and said that the government is organizing various programmes related to good habitat like sanitation, tree plantation and model toilets in MCD schools on a small scale and expressed the hope that these will set examples for all stake holders to contribute their bit to this cause of habitat development.
Shri Sachin Pilot assured all support to Sulabh movement in their endeavor to spread their work across the country and said that with the country having 50% of the population below 40 years, the youngsters should come forward in upliftment of downtrodden and sensitizing people about other social issues like scavenging, sanitation etc.
