industrial production up by nearly 8 per cent in august

The Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 1993-94 for the month of August 2004 have been released by the Central Statistical Organisation. The General Index stands at 196.4, which is higher by 7.9% as compared to the level in the month of August 2003.

2. The Indices of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors for the month of August 2004 stand at 142.4, 205.8, and 178.7 respectively, with the corresponding growths of 4.7%, 8.2% and 7.1% as compared to August 2003. The cumulative growth during April-August, 2004-05 over the corresponding period of 2003-04 in the three sectors have been 5.2%, 8.2% and 7.7% respectively, with the overall growth in the General Index being 7.9%.

3. Alongwith the Quick Estimates of IIP for August 2004, the indices for July 2004 have undergone the first revision and those for May 2004, the second (final) revision in the light of the updated data received from the source agencies. There are no significant revisions in the indices for May 2004 and July 2004.

4. As many as 15 of the 17 two-digit industry groups have shown positive growth during the month of August 2004 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year. 'Machinery and Equipment other than Transport Equipment' have shown the highest growth of 26.3%, followed by 18.2% in 'Other Manufacturing Industries' and 13.3% in 'Basic Chemicals & Chemical Products (except products of Petroleum & Coal)'. On the other hand, 'Wood and Wood Products; Furniture and Fixtures' have shown a negative growth of 10.6% followed by a decline of 2.5% in 'Wool, Silk and Man-Made Fibre Textiles'.

5. As per Use-based classification, the growth in August 2004 over August 2003 is 5.2% in Basic goods, 15.4% in Capital goods and 5.5% in Intermediate goods. The Consumer durables and Consumer non-durables have recorded growth of 13.9% and 9.6% respectively, with the overall growth in Consumer goods being 10.7%.

6. Statements giving Quick Estimates of the Index of Industrial Production at Sectoral, 2-digit level of National Industrial Classification (NIC)-1987 and by Use-based classification for the month of August 2004, along with the growth rates over the corresponding month of previous year, including the cumulative indices and growth rates, are enclosed.
