Even as Parinda.Com visited the show of Husain and Ram Kumar old work at Jehangir Art Gallery, and even appreciated the early Husain, it was clear that the art lovers had eyes only for Ram Kumar's work.
What has clinched the issue against him is the abortion of his much publicised 100 crore deal with Mumbai based businessman Guruswaroop Srivastva. Swaroop found himself in the midst of scandalous allegations of fraud and forgery and was arrested. Whatever the reasons, the deal that had been announced in Sept 2004 was dropped like a hot potato.
Contemporary Taiyab Mehta's rate turned out to be much more than of Husain.
Even his film making activity seemed on the decline. While Gajagamini was a painting on celluloid - and got him a lot of mileage - his second film with Tabu, Meenakshi: The Tale of Four Cities was a total disappointment. He announced a third film with Urmila Matondkar but it doesn't seem to have gone beyond the announcement.
The question that is worrying his admirers is, is the legend over? Has Husain spent himself, stretching himself too thin?
Only future will tell.
