The Minister of Labour, Shri Sis Ram Ola, has emphasized the need to evolve transparent and people-friendly procedures to ensure that workers migrating for jobs abroad do not have to undergo hardships. He was opening a three-day orientation workshop on external migration policy at the V.V. Giri National Institute of Labour in NOIDA today.

Shri Ola said that nearly 20 million people of Indian origin or non-resident Indians are currently living in almost every part of the world. Of late, there has been a considerable increase in the number of persons migrating for jobs from India. The Minister noted that as a result, the inflow of remittances from the workers has gone up to 16 billion US dollars per annum. This factor has to be taken into consideration while formulating and implementing the migration policy. The policy must aim at ensuring that the rights of Indian workers are always protected.

Jointly hosted by the V.V. Giri National Labour Institute, NOIDA and the Protector General of Emigrants, Ministry of Labour, the workshop was attended by 25 field-level functionaries representing different departments concerned with emigration and immigration of workers.
