Indian Railways have begun using Khadi and Handloom products for upholstery and linen items in trains, railway offices and railway rest houses.
The Railways are procuring Khadi and Handloom products from Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) and Association of Cooperatives and Apex Societies of Handlooms (ACASH), the two nodal agencies of the Government of India for supply of Khadi and Handlooms respectively.
Total annual requirement of linesn and upholstery of Khadi and Handloom is about Rs. 40 crores.
The Railway Board have held meetings with KVIC and ACASH to ensure uninterrupted supply of Khadi and Handlooms on Railways. This follows announcement by the Railway Minister Shri Lalu Prasad in the Railway Budget speech on July 6, 2004 in the Lok Sabha.
The use of Khadi and Handlooms is intended to generate employment among weavers.
