The number of train accidents has come down substantially from 217 accidents in April-October 2003 to 133 during the same period in the current fiscal year, registering a decline by 38.70 per cent.
During the period ending October 2004, there were seven collisions, 80 derailments, 36 accidents at unmanned level crossings, two accidents at manned level crossing, seven cases of fire in trains and one miscellaneous.
Drastic reduction in train accidents is attributed to a better alert mindedness of frontline staff, improved maintenance of rail assets and timely renewal of assets.
