The Government has called State Cooperative Ministers meet on next month 7th to discuss amendment in constitution to empower cooperatives. The meeting will discuss the issues pertaining to present state of cooperatives and take into account suggestions from the states to prepare the final amendment draft, said the Union Agriculture Minister Shri Sharad Pawar in a meeting, here today. The bill will be introduced in the next session of parliament, after the consensus of the states and the amendment will be proposed in lines of 73rd amendment for more powers to Panchayat Raj Institutions, he said.
The Minister said that the Common Minimum Programme of the UPA government is committed for constitutional amendment for democratic, autonomous and professional functioning of the cooperatives. Regular elections to cooperatives, time limit for the management, timely audit of accounts, filing of returns and general body meetings and access to information to the members are certain key issues which would give meaning to the spirit of cooperatives.
National Cooperative Union of India (NCUI) has felicitated the Minister on the eve of cooperative centenary celebrations. Representatives from various cooperatives and experts in the field suggested make cooperative sector more meaningful and vibrant. Dr. S S Sisodia, President, NCUI, presided over the meeting.
