Myanmar has shown keen interest in India’s various industries including heavy machine tools and small and medium enterprises. Myanmar’s Minister of Commerce Brig. Gen. Tin Naing Thein said this today to Shri Sontosh Mohan Dev, Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises, who is on tour to that country. The two Ministers, while recognising the need for enhancing trade and economic co-operation between India and Myanmar, discussed various issues ranging from Foreign Direct Investment to security along the Indo-Myanmar border. Shri Sontosh Mohan Dev briefed the Myanmar Minister on India’s strength in various sectors including IT, automotive and readymade garments ,adding that India was willing to extend its expertise in these sectors to Myanmar.

Shri Dev’s visit coincides with the first India-ASEAN Car Rally in the historical city of Mandalay. A Seminar on ‘Across Borders: India Myanmar Trade and Economic Co-operation’ was also held today to mark the Car Rally. The Minister assured that India will continue to import Myanmar’s teak products, precious stones and beans and pulses as they were of high quality.

Shri Dev invited Myanmar’s Commerce Minister to the Second Session of the Joint Trade Committee scheduled to be held in New Delhi in January 2005
