shri shibu soren takes over as coal minister

Shri Shibu Soren, after being inducted into the Union Cabinet, took over today as the Minister for Coal. Shri Soren was elected to the 14th Lok Sabha and took over on May 24, 2004 as the Cabinet Minister for Coal and Mines. He resigned from the Government on July 24, 2004.

A born crusader against the exploitation of weaker sections, Shri Soren, at the young age of 18, organized youths and started in 1962 an agitation against landlords, who exploited the tribal people of Bihar. Beginning from North Chhota Nagpur, his agitation spread to Bokaro, Jaridih, Bermo, Gomia, Kasmar, Dhanbad, Tundi and Giridih. He had popular support of tribals and consequently, his area of influence gradually spread to Singhbhum and Santhal Paragana.

On February 4, 1973, he organized Jharkhand Mukti Morcha at Dhanbad as a political party. In 1980, he was elected to Lok Sabha from Dumka. In 1984 he was elected to Bihar State Assembly from Jama. He was elected to Lok Sabha consecutively thrice from Dumka in 1989, 1991 and 1996 general elections. In 1997, he was elected to Rajya Sabha and in 2002 bi-election he was again elected to Lok Sabha from Dumka. He was the member of many Parliamentary Committees attached to different Ministries.
