Smt. Santosh Chowdhary, the newly appointed Chairperson of the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis has taken charge of office here on Monday, the November 8th 2004. Three other members Shri Ram Swaroop Ram, Smt. Gangaben Amrutlal Vaghela and Shri Shiv Balak Pasi have been nominated as members in the Commission. Shri Ram Swaroop Ram and Smt. Gangaben Vaghela have already taken over the charge as members.
Smt. Santosh Chowdhary belongs to Chandigarh and was elected to the 10th and 13th Lok Sabha from Phillaur in Punjab. Smt. Chowdhary has held various prestigious posts during her career viz. Chairperson, Punjab Public Service Commission, Vice President, All India Mahila Congress Committee, Chairman Speakers panel in Lok Sabha, Convenor, Official Language Committee (3rd Committee), Member, Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Committee, Member, Consultative Committee, Ministry of Labour.
The Safai Karamchari Commission was set up to recommend to the Central Government, specific programme of action towards elimination of inequalities in status, facilities and opportunities for safai Karamcharis, study and evaluate the implementation of the programmes and schemes, social and economic rehabilitation of safai karamcharis and scavengers in particular and investigate the specific grievances and to take suo-moto note of matters relating to non-implementation of the progrmmes or schemes, guidelines, instructions aiming at mitigating hardship of safai karamcharis. Besides, the Commission is required to oversee the implementation of the national action plan for total eradication of manual scavenging by 2007.
