safety enhancement at railway level crossing gates

Wednesday, November 17, 2004

Indian Railways have carried out interlocking with signals and telephones at 139 and 199 level crossing gates respectively during the first half of the current financial year ending September 2004.

The Railways have also developed a reliable Train Actuated Warning Device (TAWD) for giving audio-visual warning to road users about an approaching train. The TAWD has been designed to reduce accidents at level crossings by giving audio-visual warning to road users about an approaching train. Work is in progress at selected 90 level crossing gates.

The TAWD is intended to eliminate accidents at level crossings caused by road users. The highest number of accidents on the railways is caused by road users, who are in a tearing hurry to cross the track before an approaching train could pass over.
