The Government has commissioned a long rail project at a cost of about Rs. 400 crores at Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) to produce 65 metre long rails and further weld them to 260 metre long panels in BSP.
The supply of 65 metre long rails by SAIL has started from September 2004. So far, 1500 metric tonnes, 65 metre long rails have been supplied. These long rails have been transported directly to the site thereby reducing the multiple handling of rails.
Weld is a weak link in Railway Track. Long Rails (65 metres) welded upto 260 metre long panels are designed to imrpove safety of rail services to the nation.
BSP is the sole supplier of rails for the Indian Railways.
