Indian Railways carried 334.98 Million Tonnes (MTs) of revenue earning freight during the first seven months of the current fiscal year ending October 2004, compared to 311.29 MTs during the corresponding period of the previous year, registering incremental growth of 23.69 MTs. This was higher by 6.83 MTs than the target of 328.15 MTs.

The excellent performance of freight traffic is indicative of buoyancy in the core sector of the national economy.

During October 2004, the Railways transported 50.18 MTs of revenue freight against the target of 47.11 MTs, registering an increase of 3.07 MTs. This was also higher by 5.32 MTs over 44.86 MTs carried during the corresponding month of the previous year.
