The Chairman Railway Board and ex-officio Principal Secretary to the Government of India, Shri R.K. Singh has been elected as Chairman, World Executive Council of UIC (Union of International Railways) at a meeting of the World Executive Council on October 27, 2004 at Yokohama, Japan.

It is the first time an Indian Railway officer has been elected to this world body. It reflects the growing importance of Indian Railways in the world railway community.

The election of Shri Singh to this prestigious position will provide an opportunity for Indian Railways to play an active role in development of railways throughout member countries. It will also enable Indian Railways to assimilation beneficial features of international development towards modernizing our railways.

Headquartered at Paris, France, UIC (Union of International Railways) promotes cooperation between railways at world level and harmonizes activities to develop international transport by rail. The World Executive Council, which has 22 member countries from all continents, provides a common platform for Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of representative Railways to address issues like development of international freight corridors, emerging fields of technology, new management approach as well as areas of increased industry cooperation and development of skills among Railways Managers.
