Indian Railways have procured 44.8 lakh prestressed concrete sleepers during the first seven months of the current fiscal year ending October, 2004. The expected production of concrete sleepers is about 90 lakh by the end of 2004-2005.
The Railways produced over 88.59 lakh sleepers during 2003-2004, which was the highest ever progress in a year. The previous 10 years average was 58.58 lakh sleepers. That means the production of sleepers, during 2003-2004, increased by 51.23 per cent.
The use of concrete sleepers has been one of the most important landmarks in modernization of track. Sleepers are laid in about 80 per cent of length on broad gauge. Indian Railways are the largest consumer of concrete sleepers in the world.
