Dr. Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister of India to launch National Food for Work Programme for 150 most backward districts of the country on November 14, 2004 at village Aloor, Chevella Mandal, Ranga Reddy district in Andhra Pradesh. Dr. Raghuvansh Prasad Singh, Union Rural Development Minister and Shri Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, Chief minister Andhra Pradesh will also be present on the occasion. Shri A. Narendra, Union Minister of State, Rural Development and Smt. Suryakanta Patil, Union Minister of State, Rural Development will also be there.
National Food for Work Programme (NFFWP) will provide additional supplementary wage employment in the identified 150 districts of the country. NFFWP is a 100% centrally sponsored scheme and will be provided to the States free of cost. The transportation cost, handling charges, taxes on food-grains will be the responsibility of the States. The NFFWP will be open to all rural poor who are in need of wage employment. Collector will be the Nodal Officer at the district level. A Perspective Plan of the works to be undertaken for five years will be got prepared by the Collector with the assistance of experts.
For the year 2004-05, Rs. 2020 crores in cash and 20 lakh tonnes of food grains will be provided for the programme in addition to Sampoorna Grammen Rozgar Yojana(SGRY) allocations. For full year, the requirement will be around Rs. 5400 crores and 37 lakh tonnes of foodgrains. Five kg. Of food grains will be provided at BPL rates for each man-day to the beneficiaries. Works can be executed by the Departments, Panchayati Raj Institutions or reputed NGOs/Self Help Groups. Strict monitoring mechanism has been developed to ensure that the programme is implemented effectively.
