The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, has condoled the demise of Shri Amar Nath Varma, former Principal Secretary to Prime Minister. In a letter to Smt. Sudarshan Varma, wife of Late Shri Amar Nath Varma, Dr. Singh said:

“It is with deep shock and regret that I have learnt about the sad and untimely demise of Shri Amar Nath Varma. Shri Varma was a towering personality and an institution by himself. Through his long and chequered career as a civil servant, his contributions to the governance of this vast nation will always be remembered. He was a man endowed with vision, noble sentiments and a commitment to ensuring that India progressed as a nation.

Apart from knowing him in many capacities, I have had the honour of working closely with him when he was the Principal Secretary to Prime Minister at a time when the nation was making a historic transition in its economic policies.

My heart reaches out to the bereaved family and I pray to the Almighty that the soul of Shri Varma may rest in peace.”
