Neyveli Lignite Corporation Limited (NLC), a public sector unit of the Department of Coal has generated 1419.54 million units of power during the month September 2004 against a target of 1047 million units showing 35.8 per cent growth. The power generation during the month has been 7.26 per cent more than the generation of power of 1323.46 million units during the same month last year. The lignite production during the month has been 16.89 lakh tonnes against the target of 17.5 lakh tonnes. NLC, during the month, exported 1207.64 million units of power against a target of 855 million units with a growth of 41.24 per cent.
Geological reserves of lignite in the country have been estimated at around 35,636 million tonnes (MT). Out of the above 4,150 MT spread over 480 sq. km. is in the Neyveli Lignite fields in Cuddalore District of which around 2,360 MT have been proved.
