The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) today approved the proposal for implementation of a National Mission on Bamboo Applications by Technology Information, Forecasting & Assessment Council (TIFAC) during the Tenth Plan with a budgetary support of Rs.100 crore from the Department of Science and Technology, and an anticipated contribution of Rs.64 crore by participating agencies and partners. TIFAC would be the implementing agency of the programme under the guidance of the Department of Science and Technology. Mission oversight and review would be through a multi-disciplinary Mission Steering and Advisory Committees and inter-module allocation and flexibility would be exercised through the Mission Steering Committee.
The investment would lead to an anticipated value addition of around Rs. 800 crore annually by the end of the Tenth Plan period. It will also create substantial employment. Linkages would be forged between the organised and unorganised sectors. There will be significant environmental and ecological benefits as well as import substitution and exports.
