national commission on enterprises in the unorganized /informal sector deliberates in its first advisory board meeting

Shri Arjun Sengupta, Chairman of the National Commission on Enterprises in the unorganized /informal sector, stressed upon the urgency to come out with the concrete proposals and the PM’s desire to do significant work in this field. The Chairman also emphasized to choose areas of intervention where maximum impact may be made in the shortest possible period of time. He was speaking in the first Advisory Board Meeting of the National Commission on Enterprises in the unorganized/informal sector. The suggestions given by various members in the meeting would be followed by write-up by each of the members on which further deliberations will be taken up in the Commission. It was also decided that Shri K.K. Jaswal, Member-Secretary of the Commission would collate the information for further action by the Commission.

Dr. K.P. Kannan, Director, Centre for Development Studies, Trivendrum currently full-time member of the Commission participated in the meeting. Dr. B.N. Yugandhar, Member, Planning Commission and Dr. Bibek Debroy, Director, Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, New Delhi part-time members of the Commission also attended the meeting. The other members present were: Dr. Sheila Bhalla, Institute for Human Development , New Delhi; Ms. Madhu Kishwar, Editor, Manushi, Delhi; Shri Joginder Kumar, President, FTSSI, Ludhiana; Shri Swami Agnivesh, New Delhi; and Ms. Kamala Shankaran, New Delhi

The mandate of the Commission is to examine the problems facing the enterprises in the unorganized informal sector and to provide appropriate recommendations for technical, marketing and credit support to these enterprises. This follows the commitments of the United Progressive Alliance Government under its National Common Minimum Programme to set up an Advisory Body and watch-dog for the informal sector.
