Registrar of Newspapers for India (RNI) has started from today putting up an updated list of details of the Certificates of Registration (CRs) on its website rni.nic.in. Certificates for the month of October and November to date are available on its website. These lists will be updated on a regular basis.
The move has been undertaken to bring transparency in the working of RNI and to facilitate publishers. The Online details will be of immense assistance particularly to publishers of small newspapers at locations far off from Delhi. The list will give details such as title of the newspaper/periodical, language of publication, periodicity, place from which it is published, registration number and name of publisher.
In an advisory appearing on the website, publishers who do not receive the Certificate of Registration within four weeks from the date that it appears on the website will be asked to write to the Office of RNI quoting the Registration Number as it appears on the website. In 2003 RNI have issued 3678 Certificates of Registration (CRs) and 2510 CRs till date in the current year.
Registration number is necessary for availing of postal rate concessions, receiving advertisements from DAVP and State Governments; import of newsprint and printing machinery etc. A newspaper is registered by the Press Registrar and Office of Registrar of Newspapers for India issues a Certificate of Registration to the Publisher of a newspaper printed and published in conformity with the various provisions of Press and Registration of Books Act 1867. The Certificate of Registration is issued after recording necessary particulars about the Newspaper in the Office of Registrar of Newspapers for India. A registration number is also allotted to the newspapers.
This new initiative is expected to increase efficiency in the functioning of RNI.
