The Delhi Legal Service Authority is celebrating Legal Service Week from 3rd November, 2004 to 9th November, 2004 in order to reach entitled categories of Delhis population for free legal service. As part of the celebration, the authority organized Lok Adalats for settlements of claims pertaining to motor vehicle accidents, rent matters and dues of companies like Airtel, Reliance, Tata Tele Services, SBI Cards, Standard Chartered Bank claims on Sunday the 7th November, 2004 at Patiala House Courts, New Delhi.
The Delhi Legal Service Authority Executive Chairman, Justice B.A. Khan, Judge of the Delhi High Court also visited the courts and observed the proceedings.
In all 16 Lok Adalats were constituted and 528 matters were taken up out of which 239 matters were settled. In the 5 Lok Adalats constituted for the settlement of the accident claims, a total number of 97 cases out of 106 were settled amicably and compensation amounting to Rs.1,67,76,500/- was awarded to the victims and their family members.
As per the mandate enshrined in Article 39 A of the Constitution of India, the Legal Service Authority Act 1987 was enacted by Parliament to provide free and competent legal service to certain section of the society including women, children, members of SC & ST, victims of trafficking in human being or beggar, victims of mass disaster, ethnic violence, caste atrocities, industrial disasters and persons whose annual income does not exceed Rs.50,000. The Act came into force on the 9th of November and therefore, the said date is being celebrated as Legal Services Day throughout the country every year.
