The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh will lay foundation stone of 97.9 kilometre long Jiribam-Imphal Road (Tupul) new broad gauge line railway project at a function at Jiribam on November 20, 2004. The foundation laying ceremony will be presided over by the Chief Minister to Manipur Shri Iboba Singh and attended, among other dignitaries, by the Union Minister of Railway Shri Lalu Prasad and Minister of State for Railways Shri R. Velu.
The new line, at an anticipated cost of Rs. 727.56 crores, will terminate at Tupul, which is about 25 kilometres short of Imphal. The line beyond Tupul is not technically feasible because of steep and high hill range.
Jiribam-Imphal (Tupul) new line project assumes National importance as it would provide connectivity to the state capital of Manipur besides facilitating transportation of essential commodities to the State. The construction of this line is expected to bring about socio-economic development of this far flung North Eastern state.
Jiribam-Imphal (Tupul) new line project is in pursuance of the policy of the Government of India to provide Rail connectivity to far off places of the North Eastern Region.
