The Union Cabinet today gave its approval to adopt ISPS code for implementation with effect from July 1, 2004.
The implementation of ISPS Code with enhanced security measures to Indian ships and port facilities, which is mandatory as India is contracting party to International Convention on Safety of Life at Sea, (SOLAS), will add to maritime safety and security.
The Cabinet also gave its approval to the introduction of the Merchant Shipping (Amendment) bill, 2004 in Parliament to amend the Merchant Shipping Act, 1958 and Indian Ports Act, 1908, subject to any drafting and consequential changes which may be finalized in consultation with the Legislative Department, Ministry of Law and Justice.
