India-Nepal Telecommunication coordination Meeting was held at New Delhi on November 1 and 2, 2004. A seven member Nepalese delegation was led by Mr. Mukunda Sharma Poudyal, Secretary, Ministry of Information & Communications, MOIC, Nepal. The Indian delegation was led by Mr. Nripendra Misra, Secretary, Department of Telecommunications, Ministry of Communications & Information Technology.
Shri Misra suggested to evolve a long-term vision for the bilateral cooperation between the two countries in the field of telecommunications and draw upon a roadmap within the framework of bilateral relations to acbhieve the goals of optimally efficient telecom network based on state-of-the-art technology.
The leader from Nepalese side expressed his gratitude to the Government of India for commissioning EW OFC Phase I in the Kingdom of Nepal as a grant-in-aid. He further added that Phase I Project has been put to use and it has enabled number of cities along the alignment to get connected with the national/international mainstream which has imparted the fillip to the social-economic development of the people in this region.
During the course of the bilateral discussions on 1st & 2nd November, both sides agreed to augment the cross-border links based on the traffic requirement. Also, both sides showed keen interest in reducing the collection rate for the calls between India and Nepal.
Nepal Telecom and BSNL agreed to provide internet connectivity between the two countries by using four E1 links initially.
Both sides agreed to meet at the Secretary level annually to resolve telecommunication bilateral issues.
