government to meet challenges posed by armed activities of naxalites

Saturday, November 20, 2004

Early this morning at Narakati in Chandauli District of Uttar Pradesh, a police party going after a group of armed naxalites was ambushed and their vehicle blown up. The ambush/explosion had taken a toll of 15 lives of UP police personnel and serious injuries to another two when reports last came in. This incident was a sequel to an earlier incident on November 18 in which the same group had caused an explosion in Majghai Forest Range Office in which two UP armed police and one forest personnel were killed and two others injured.

The Government has taken a serious note of these incidents and strongly condemned the reprehensible acts of violence by terrorists. The challenge posed by armed activities of naxalites in UP and other States shall be met firmly. The State and Central Security Agencies have been asked to immediately launch operations to track down the law-breakers and neutralize the threat posed by the naxalites to internal security and law and order.

The Union Home Minister, Shri Shivraj Patil, has expressed deep shock at this outrage and expressed his condolences at the loss of lives and injuries to the UP police, Forest Department personnel. He has conveyed his sympathy and condolences to the members of bereaved families and those injured.
