excise duty exemption scheme for kutch extended

Wednesday, November 10, 2004

Following the massive earthquake in Gujarat in January 2001, the Central Government, to attract investment, had then notified, an excise duty exemption scheme for specified goods manufactured by new units to be set up in the Kutch District of Gujarat.

The exemption was available only to new units, which were set up and started commercial production on or before 31st December 2003. The exemption under the scheme is for a period of five years from the date of start of commercial production. Subsequently the last date for setting up of new units and starting commercial production was extended to 31st December 2004.

After consideration of requests for further extension, the Central government has now extended the time limit for setting up of new units and starting commercial production upto 31st December 2005. This will give sufficient time for completion of ongoing projects.
