This Conference will discuss the social sector agenda of the Government. The basic challenge of poverty eradication and building a just and equitable social order remains the central theme of the government’s development initiatives. The programmes target large segments of population, particularly in villages, and aim to provide basic services such as clean drinking water, reasonable shelter, primary education, health services and roads. Rural development and human development issues, in particular, need strong advocacy.

Around 300 Editors, Columnists and Senior Correspondents representing national and regional newspapers, will deliberate these issues in depth during the Conference. Thirteen key Ministries namely, Rural Development, Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution, Small Scale Industries and Agro & Rural Industries, Social Justice & Empowerment, Health & Family Welfare, Environment & Forests, Urban Development & Poverty Alleviation, Non Conventional Energy Resources, Human Resource Development, Tribal Affairs & Development of North Eastern Region, Tourism and Statistics & Programme Implementation, have been invited for participation in the Conference.

In this context, the economic objectives of the National Common Minimum Programme(NCMP), adopted by the United Progressive Alliance(UPA) Government include providing universal access to quality basic education, nutrition and health, generating gainful employment in agriculture, manufacturing, services, promoting investment and assuring 100 days employment to the breadwinner in each family at the minimum wage.

Individual Ministries will unfold the roadmaps through presentations/addresses to achieve the objectives of the Government. They will also hold informal discussions on current reforms with media representatives invited from all regions of the country.
