Government is planning to introduce a new centrally sponsored scheme for setting up of desalination plants for drinking water supply in coastal urban areas of the country as envisaged in the National Common Minimum Programme. Proposal for setting up of desalination plants have been invited from the State Governments in Coromondel Coast, namely Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry.
Government of Orissa has identified 3 towns namely Puri, Konark and Gopalpur, Andhra Pradesh is in the process of preparing project report for installation of desalination plant of 1.5 mld capacity at Bhimunipatnam. Union Territory of Pondicherry has identified a town Muthailpet to provide desalination plant at an estimated cost of Rs.13.50 crore. Tamil Nadu has identified Keelakarai, Ramanathanpuram, Thiruvottiyur, Kathivakkam, Ambattur and Madavaram. In addition, government is actively considering setting up of Rs.1000 crore desalination plant at Chennai as announced by the Finance Minister in his budget speech.
