In all, 2549 consumer court cases against the Indian Railways were pending on August 31, 2004.
Total amount of compensation paid by the railways during 2003-2004 and April-August 2004 amounted to Rs. 11,22,523.
The majority of the consumer court cases were pending on Northern Railway (544), Eastern (374), Central (249), North Eastern (231), Western (228), North Central (204), East Central (114) and North Western (104). These eight Zonal Railways account for 75 per cent of the total cases.
Consumer Court cases against the railways have emanated from deficiencies in train services.
