The Department of Consumer Affairs has constituted a committee for formulating a National Consumer Policy. The 10-member Committee under the Chairmanship of Principal Secretary, Cooperation, Food and Consumer Protection, Government of Tamil Nadu has been requested to submit its draft policy within three months. The broad terms of reference of the Committee would be to examine all issues with the guidelines for consumer protection adopted by the United Nations in 1985.

The other members of the committee are the consumer affairs secretaries of Jammu and Kashmir, Tripura, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, a nominee of Government of Tamil Nadu and a representative each of Consumer Unity & Trust Society, Jaipur; Consumer Education And Research Centre, Ahmedabad and Consumer Education Research, Teaching Training and Testing, Chennai.

The Ministry has constituted yet another Committee for evolving suitable system for handling consumer complaints under the Chairmanship of Secretary, Consumer Affairs, Government of West Bengal. This Committee will look into possible use of Lok Adalat for quicker disposal of consumer grievances, to evolve suitable systems for handling consumer complaints by voluntary consumer organization and to organize workshop on the handling of consumer complaints and related issues. The Committee is to submit its report within three months.
