Monday, November 08, 2004

Indian Railways and National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) have started setting up a joint venture company named “Rail Bijlee Company” at Nabinagar in Bihar.

The Company will generate 1,000 megawatt power for traction requirement of Indian Railways at a reasonable cost. The Thermal Plant is estimated to cost Rs. 4,300 crores.

The joint venture “Rail Bijlee Company” will have equity partnership of 51 per cent by Railways and 49 per cent by NTPC.

The State Electricity Boards have been charging super commercial rates from the railways, making electric traction unviable. Hence, a captive Thermal Power Plant for the Railways.
