The Supreme Court of India has upheld a decision of the Konkan Railway Corporation in giving award to the tenderers for the design and construction of the bridge across the river Chenab in Jammu & Kashmir. In a verdict, the Apex Court has dismissed the plea of an unsuccessful bidder for the same. Earlier, the High Court of Mumbai had rejected categorically the same plea in the first week of October 2004. The High Court noted the level of transparency and fairness exercised by the Konkan Railway in awarding of the work.
Konkan Railway is executing construction of the new railway line in the KatraLaole Section of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link Project in Jammu & Kashmir. The Konkan Railway has finalized the tender for Chenab bridge, costing over Rs. 500 crores in a record time of less than three months, which is first of its kind in Indian Infrastructure Projects.
The bridge on river Chenab will have a total length of 1320 metres, the single longest arch span of 480 metres and the height from the bed level to the rail level of 359 metres. The work, awarded to M/s. ULTRA-AFCONS, VSL (JV), is in full swing. The bridge is scheduled to be completed by the first quarter of 2007.
