Thirty-four cooperative societies have been selected for this years Cooperative Excellence awards. The awards will be presented by the Prime Minister on 16th November.
The Biennial Awards are given by the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) for outstanding performance by grass-root level cooperatives to inculcate the spirit of competition amongst them. The Award carries Rs 50,000 and a citation. (List of awardees is annexed).
The year 2004 happens to be the centenary year of the cooperative movement in the country, the NCDC has been organizing national events to mark the year.
A workshop on Cooperatives Road Ahead and Experience Sharing Session is also being organized on 16th November. The workshop to be inaugurated by the Minister of State for Agriculture Shri Kantilal Bhuria will focus on the experience of successful cooperatives so that others could benefit from them.
The cooperatives have wide social base with participation of all sections of society including women, youth, tribals and weaker sections. The movement has grown as the largest in the world with more than 5 lakh cooperatives and 23 crore membership. Cooperative institutions disburse about 46 per cent of agricultural credit and contribute half the national production of sugar about 55 per cent of handlooms are in cooperative sector. It has spread to fishery, poultry, handloom, dairy and a range of other activities.
