The rate of inflation based upon the Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers witnessed a marginal decrease of 0.24 percentage points during October 2004. It went down from 4.81% in September 2004 to 4.57% in October 2004. In October 2003, the inflation rate was 3.29 %.
The All India Consumer Price Index Number for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) for October 2004 (base 1982-100) went up by three points to stand at 526 (five hundred twenty six) points.
The Rise/Fall in index varied from centre to centre. In 47 centres, the index increased between 1 to 21 points and in 9 centres it remained constant whereas in another 14 centres it recorded a decrease of 1 to 8 points when compared to the previous month.
During the month, Howrah centre experienced the maximum increase of 21 points. The increase is mainly due to rise in prices of Arhar Dal, Goat Meat, Fresh Fish, Onions and Vegetables and Fruits. Salem Centre experienced a maximum decrease of 8 points. The decrease is mainly due to the fall in prices of Rice, Arhar Dal, Fish Fresh, Washing soap etc. However, the index remained stationery in 9 centres viz. Varanasi, Solapur, Hubli-Dharwar, Faridabad, Yamunanagar, Mundakayam, Belgaum, Coonoor and Madurai.
The index in respect of six main centres for October 2004 stood at the following level: -
