Nine States are providing unemployment allowance to disabled persons rates of which vary from Rs. 50/- to Rs. 500/- per month. While in Sikkim and Tripura, the rate of allowance is Rs. 500/- pr month, in Punjab it varies from Rs. 150/- to Rs. 400/- and in Tamil Nadu from Rs. 200/- to Rs. 300/- per month. In Mizoram, the unemployed disabled persons are provided with Rs. 100/- allowance, in Andhra Pradesh Rs. 75/- and in Meghalaya Rs. 50/- per month. West Bengal and Haryana have also schemes providing the allowance. The Persons with Disabilities Act, 1995 stipulates payment of unemployment allowance to such persons with disabilities who are registered with special employment exchanges for more than two years but could not be placed in any gainful occupation. The Act provides for framing schemes by State Government for this purpose keeping in view of their economic capacity and development. Different State Governments have adopted different eligibility criteria for provid8idng unemployment allowance.
