As per the information available, around 5 per cent of workers in age group of 20-24 receive skill training in formal training institutions, while as majority of workers in the country acquire skills through informal means after joining a particular job. This was stated by the Minister for Labour and Employment, Shri K. Chandrasekhar Rao in a written reply in Rajya Sabha. He said the Government has taken up various steps to create qualitative labour force. These include encouragement of private sector in setting up training institutes, upgradation of 100 existing ITIs as Centres of Excellence, modernization of existing ITIs in Jammu & Kashmir and North East Eastern States including Sikkim and Testing and Certification of skills obtained by the labour force informally.
