Government is committed to the welfare of the workers and is accordingly facilitating early finalisation of the National Coal Wage Agreement VII", Minister of State for Coal, Dr. Dasari Narayana Rao said in a statement in the Lok Sabha today. He was responding to a calling attention motion on non-finalisation of National Coal Workers Wage Agreement VII moved by Shri Basudeb Acharia, CPI (M).

The Minister said he had held discussions with the representatives of the Trade Unions and the Management on May 3 on advice of the Group of Ministers constituted under the chairmanship of the Defence Minister, Shri Pranab Mukherjee to look into the issues concerning wage negotiations in the best interest of the industry, labour and national economy. An understanding was reached on all the contentious issues and the positive outcome of this meeting was reported to the Chairman of the Group of Ministers for further consideration.

Both the Management and Central Trade Unions have agreed to hold Core Group Meeting on May 18-19, 2005 and full meeting of the Joint Bi-partite Committee for Coal Industry (JBCCI) will be held on May 29-30, 2005 to finalise the agreement. Sincere efforts are being made to resolve the issues so that an acceptable wage agreement is arrived at.
