The Union Health and Family Welfare Minister, Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss and the Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Smt. Vasundhara Raje Scindia are to inaugurate the State Level Regional Consultations on the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) in Jaipur on Monday. This is the second round of State Level Regional Consultations that the Union Minister will be participating in after the first one held in Bhopal in April last. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has planned a series of regional consultations in the coming months for the states of Orissa, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar as part of the NRHM which was launched by the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh on April 12, 2005.
The Jaipur State Level Consultations is to be attended by all the District Collectors and the Health Officers of the districts and aims at helping the officers to properly understand the implementation of the mission and its objective. As part of the consultations, efforts will be made to draw up a strategy as per local needs to ensure effective and successful implementation of the NRHM.
As already reported, the NRHM aims at filling up the gaps in the existing rural healthcare infrastructure available in the country. The key strategy of the NRHM will be the creation of a cadre of Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) in 2.5 lakhs villages in a phased manner. Under the NRHM, the health infrastructure in the state and in the districts are also to be strengthened; sub-centers will receive untied funds of Rs.10,000 per annum for improvement. The implementation will also aim to raise the level of over 2000 community health centers and integrate vertical health and family welfare programmes at National, state and district levels.
The mission is to be implemented throughout the country with special focus on 18 states viz. Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Rajasthan, Uttranchal, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.
