The Project Sea Bird in Karwar would be operationalised in a phased manner. Commencing with the commissioning of Depot Ship (INS Kadamba) this month. The Naval base at Karwar would provide berthing, administrative, maintenance and support services to warships of navy which would be equipped with modern weapons. The total amount spent so far on the project is Rs. 1825.82 crores. The total manpower requirement for naval base at Karwar is estimated as 2901 personnel. Out of this, 1541 posts have already been sanctioned. The remaining 1360 posts required for Ship Intermediate Maintenance Authority / Naval Ship Repair Yard which includes 1219 civilian personnel is yet to be sanctioned by the Government.
