The Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, Thiru T.R. Baalu today chaired the first meeting to discuss and coordinate the arrangements for the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project. The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, Smt. Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson, National Advisory Council, Dr. Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi, former Chief Minister, Tamil Nadu and other Union Ministers and dignitaries are expected to attend the ceremony.
Addressing the officials, Thiru Baalu said that the purpose of the meeting was to streamline the arrangements required so that the foundation stone laying ceremony can be held as early as possible. After the expeditious approval of the prestigious Project by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs on May 19, 2005, it would be the Governments endeavour to kick-start the Project without loosing any more time, he stressed. The probable function site, Thiru Baalu said, would be decided later.
The meeting was attended by the Secretary, Shipping, Chairman and MD, Sethusamudram Corporation Limited, Chairman and MD, Dredging Corporation of India, MD, Indian Ports Association, DG AIR, Director (News), Doordarshan and officials from BSNL and Ministry of Home Affairs.
