pm presents drdo technology awards

The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh presented Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) technology awards for the year 2003 and 2004 to outstanding scientists of the DRDO and some private companies here today. Shri M Natarajan, Scientific Advisor to Defence Minister welcomed the guests and gave an update on the products, technologies and achievements during the past year.

In recognition of the excellent contribution in the field of Sonar Systems in surface ships, submarines and helicopters of the Indian Navy, the Silicon Trophy for the Best Systems Laboratory was awarded by the Prime Minister to the Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory, Kochi for the year 2004 while the Defence Electronics Research Laboratory, Hyderabad bagged similar trophy for the year 2003 for their singular contribution towards successfully executing the electronic warfare equipment - mission mode programme for the three services of the Indian Armed Forces.

The Prime Minister awarded the Titanium Trophy for the Best Science Laboratory for the year 2003 to Defence Bio - Engineering & Electro Medical Laboratory (DEBEL), Bangalore for the exceptional achievements in the areas of development and evaluation of life support systems for the armed forces and development of biomedical instrumentation and devices for the soldiers at high altitude, which were a significant saving in foreign exchange. Similar trophy for the year 2004 was awarded to Institute of Nuclear Medicine & Allied Sciences, Delhi for the significant contributions in academics, pioneering research efforts and fostering interactions with industries specially in developing 2-Deoxy-D-glucose, Titanium implants, ITAD therapy and Light Weight Foldable Stretcher.

Dr. Manmohan Singh conferred the Life Time Achievement Award for the year 2003 on Lt Gen (Retd) V J Sundaram in recognition of the long outstanding contributions in the fields of Missiles, Astronautics and Instrumentation as well as his continued support and guidance to DRDO in the development of Trishul, Agni, Aakash and Nag missiles. Shri R N Agarwal, Distinguished Scientist and Director, Advanced Systems Laboratory, Hyderabad and Programme Director - Agni, known for pioneering the development and establishment of long range missile systems for which successful maiden flight was conducted in 1989, was conferred with the Life Time Achievement Award for the year 2004, for his outstanding contributions to missile technologies in the country. He has been a recipient of Padma Shri in 1990 and Padma Bhushan in 2000.

The other important awards given away on the occasion were the Technology Leadership Award, Agni Award for Excellence in Self Reliance, DRDO award for Performance Excellence, Defence Technology Absorption Award, Scientist of the Year Award, Defence Technology Spin Off Award and Award for Path Breaking Research.

The Defence Minister Shri Pranab Mukherjee was also present on the occasion.
